Pan Am realised the need for a dual time wrist watch for their pilots after transatlantic travel times were halved. They needed to keep their pilots on 'home' time while being simultaneously aware of local time. This was to counter act the symptoms of jet lag. In 1954 the ref. 6542 was released and this was the first GMT. Shortly after in 1959, an updated version of the GMT was released with the ref. 1675. The 1675 was produced for 21 years until 1980 and was the only GMT produced by Rolex in this period. The Rolex GMT has become one of the most distinguishable dual time zone wrist watches. With its blue and red bezel, these have become known as the Pepsi among collectors.
