“Il Barcone” by Giovanni Cerri, 2008, mixed technique on canvas, 60x50 cms - This work is part of the “Spes contra spem” series begun in 2016 and exhibited at the solo exhibition at Spazio Bigli in Milan in 2017. The theme is the drama of the Mediterranean sea disasters, disasters that happen year after year of migrations from the North African coast to Italy. The painting represents a desperate screaming crowd over one of the now well-known “sea carcasses” that often do not reach the coast, but sink leaving their victims drowned in a great underwater cemetery. The theme of the shipwreck (or better, the repeated and continual shipwrecks) recall the masterpiece of 19th century French painting, The Raft of the Medusa (La Radeau de la Méduse) by Théodore Géricault, who painted this work in 1819, exactly 200 years ago.
