Portrait jug and plate, bearing handpainted depictions of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and others -- all identified on the undersides of the pieces. Sevres date mark indicates that the pieces were originally made in 1755-6. The pieces were likely decorated in the 1780s, as the French would hardly have been celebrating him by any later than 1790 (he was arrested in 1792 and later executed). Supporting this assumption is the presence of tiny dark spots, mostly around the feet of the pitcher and plate, indicating that it was refired (decorating earlier blanks was not an uncommon practice at the Sevres factory). Very fine condition, with no damage or repairs. Some gilt wear, as shown in images. Pitcher measures 7" high, and plate measures 8-5/8" diameter. Both are lavishly gilt and raised jewel decorated.
