清一八八零? ?《西遊記》繪本四十件
James Ware (1859-1913), an English captain in the Merchant Navy arrived in Shanghai with his wife in 1881 to set up a business. Instead, moved by the local poverty they both turned to missionary work after joining the service of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Ware served in the committee that revised the translation of the New Testament and completed the translation of the Old Testament. He preached in the Shanghai dialect, using stories from the culture of his converts to draw comparisons between the Christian and the Chinese concepts of afterlife. The Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classic Chinese Novels featuring the legendary Monkey King, translated by Ware and illustrated by itinerant Chinese artists under his careful instruction was used for this purpose.
