Description: An Imperial Chinese Ming-style moonflask with a 6-character Yongzheng mark and of the period. The flask has a compressed globular body and a waisted neck with a pair of dragon handles, all resting on an oval-shaped foot. It is painted all over with floral scrolls representing the 4 seasons. The vase is well modelled with a flattened globular body, tapering to an oval foot, surmounted by a tall waisted neck and flanked by a pair of archaistic dragon handles; the whole is boldly painted in vivid tones of cobalt blue with simulated ‘heaping and piling’, depicting large stylised lotuses and smaller attendant blooms borne on an undulating foliate meander, between pendent ruyi heads and upright lappets, all below a band of plantain leaves at the neck; the mouth and foot are encircled by bands of cresting waves, while the underside is inscribed with a six-character Yongzheng seal mark. The decoration on this vase is meticulously executed in the finest cobalt blue. The composition of lotus blooms and foliate scrolls is perfectly balanced through a thorough understanding of the importance of spacing in successfully creating a rich yet not overcrowded design. These curling lines are offset by the bold geometric rendering of the petal and leaf borders, all of which are circumscribed with crashing wave bands around the foot and mouth rim – ingeniously selected as they mirror the curvilinear and geometric forms of the overall design. Both the shape and decoration of the vessel take their inspiration from early fifteenth century blue and white porcelain of the Imperial collection. The flat circular form has its roots in archaic bronzes which were adapted into porcelain and painted with luxurious lotus designs during the Ming dynasty. Yongzheng vase is extremely rare, there is only one known example exists, that’s in the Tianminglou collection Dimensions are: 17 inches X 13 inches.
