Franz Seraph von LenbachPortrait of a Lady in PearlsOil on canvas. 64 x 56.5 cm.Signed lower right: Lenbach.ProvenancePrivate ownership, Munich. - Private ownership, London.Lenbach is regarded as one of the most important German portraitists of his time. The cream of high society frequented his home in order to have their portraits painted. He sought inspiration for his works in those of the old masters such as Rubens, Titian, and Veronese, but he also utilised the new medium of photography as the basis for his paintings. With rapid brushstrokes, he portrayed popes, kings, emperors, elegant ladies, politicians, and businessmen in his own unmistakable style, which has had a lasting impact on the way we view the high society of the late 19th century to this day. We would like to thank Dr Sonja von Baranow for confirming the authenticity of this piece based on high resolution photographs.
