Kosho (1534-1621)
A large wood figure of the Bodhisatva JizoMomoyama (1573-1615) or Edo (1615-1868) period, late 16th/early 17th centuryOf yosezukuri (joined-block) construction, the figure shown seated half pendant on an elaborate rock base, the left hand holding a sacred jewel and the right with a staff and finished in pigments and gold lacquer, the eyes inlaid in crystal, the interior signed Kosho Daibusshi, and inscribed with the address of the sculptor's workshop and the name of the donor who commissioned the work

A native of Kyoto and chief sculptor to the Toji Temple, Kosho seems to have been active primarily as a restorer of Buddhist statuary; new works from his hand are rare.
