An 18th to 19th Century Chinese Huanghuali Brush Pot
十八至十九世纪中国黄花梨木笔筒
The Chinese term huanghuali literally means "yellow flowering pear" wood. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified as Dalbergia odorifera. In pre-modern times the wood was known as huali or hualu. Brush pots were first produced during the Late-Ming Dynasty and around the Wanli period. Used by literati scholars in China whose poetry, calligraphy, and paintings were supposed primarily to reveal their cultivation and express their personal feelings rather than demonstrate professional skill. Chinese scholar's objects were, in a sense, the luxury goods of their time, but rather than wealth what they really represented was the physical embodiment of the scholar's intellectual curiosity and aesthetic taste.
This example is typical in its cylindrical form, open topped, unadorned, elegant and simple.
