Ming and Qing dynasty furniture advocated a perfect combination of the beauty of nature and the artistic craft of man, becoming the physical embodiment of the Taoist concept of Tian (heaven) and Ren (human, man), 'The Unity of Man and Nature.'
In the history of Chinese furniture the mazar is the predecessor of the chair. This folding stool, also known as Mazar or a 'hu bed' is most commonly found amongst the nomadic people in the northern regions of China. The 'X' shaped stretcher formed in hardwood can be folded and stacked saving space, whilst its humble materials make it light and easy to carry, the hessian seat is delicately woven and in good condition for its age.
