Description:
A BRONZE AMITAYUS, 13TH–14TH CENTURY
Western Tibet. Seated on a high double lotus pedestal in Dhyanasana, with hands in meditation mudra and holding the vase of longevity. Wearing a shawl and dhoti, with a billowing celestial scarf around his shoulders and arms, the face with a meditative expression surmounted by an elaborate tiara.
Provenance: English private collection.
Condition: Extensive wear and traces of use, as expected on a bronze with this age. Old drillings and minor losses to base. Remainders of gilding and varnish. Unsealed. The small reliquary casket to backside is empty.

The pierces earlobes, the tall five-leaf crown with panels hinged to the chignon, the upward-flying ribbons and the rendering of the celestial scarf are typical features of 13th and 14th century Western Tibetan sculptures of Dyani Buddhas.
