A RARE ACUPUNCTURIST’S HEAD, QING DYNASTY
China, 19th century. The life-size male head naturalistically carved of two heavy segments of massive Hongmu, a fine varnish coating beautifully enhancing the natural grain of the wood, painted with Chinese characters in turquoise lacquer against numerous, partially connected acupuncture spots.
Provenance: From an old English private collection of medical antiques.
Condition: Chipping to right eyebrow. Some age cracks and losses as visible on images. Wear, traces of use and minor scratches. The base with minor old soiling.
