AN EPIC IVORY PANEL OF THE SUMMER PALACE, BEIJING
China, Republic period, 1912-1949. Magnificent depiction of the palace complex in reticulated openwork carving with vast gardens, murals, pavilions, halls, all behind a scenic background of mountains and clouds. A school class is entering the main gate, accompanied by their teachers.
Provenance: From a private estate. By repute, acquired in China between 1920 and 1930.
Condition: Superb condition with only very few tiny losses. No repair of any kind. Minuscule aging-related hairlines.

In 1912, following the abdication of Puyi, the Last Emperor, the Summer Palace became the private property of the former imperial family of the Qing Empire. Two years later, the Summer Palace was opened to the public and entry tickets were sold. In 1924, after Puyi was expelled from the Forbidden City by the warlord Feng Yuxiang, the Beijing municipal government took charge of administrating the Summer Palace and turned it into a public venue.
