Description:
AN ARCHAISTIC SPINACH GREEN JADE BRUSH HOLDER, QING
China, second half of the Qing dynasty. Ingenuously carved in openwork of three interlocked segments, with slightly curved bridges decorated with Buddhist “wheels of joy” amid swirling symbols of energy, all neatly carved in high relief.
Provenance: English private collection.
Condition: Excellent condition with old wear and a few minuscule nibbles to edges.
Weight: 621.6 grams
Dimensions: Height 11.6 cm
The stone with an intense spinach green color, black inclusions, unctuous surface and good patina.
Archaistic vessels and dishes are known to have been made throughout almost the whole Qing dynasty. While the quality of both the carving and the mineral would support an earlier dating, it remains this authors opinion that this Bitong was carved sometimes during the second half of the Qing dynasty or, rather unlikely, during the earlier Republic Period.
