Description:
A SPINACH GREEN JADE MUGHAL STYLE BOWL, QING
China, 18th – 19th century. The translucent jade bowl is carved in high relief, the mineral being of almost flawless dark-green color, with a good and smooth surface finish.
Provenance: Hungarian private collection. The counterpart to this bowl was sold in our rooms on June 16th, 2018, lot 35. The two bowls were unintentionally separated, because the second bowl was discovered in the estate of the collector only after the first bowl had already been sold.
Condition: Perfect condition.
Weight: 94.1 grams
Dimensions: Diameter 12 cm
With a circumferential band of raised lotus flowers accompanied by their vines and leaves, the lip surrounded by a traditional band of ruyi, the raised foot rim surrounded by a formalized chrysanthemum petal band.
This bowl is an interesting example of two cultures meeting in one single design. The traditional Chinese is represented by a strictly formal ruyi band, while the Mughal is represented by a no less formal, yet completely different band of aligned geometric Chrysanthemum petals. The large flower band is situated in the center between those two smaller bands and bears characteristics from both cultures.
Auction result comparison: Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art. Sotheby’s, Hong Kong, April 8th, 2014, lot 3071. (for a pair of translucent white jade bowls, showing a related carving technique)
