During the Qianlong period, the Emperor appears to have been fond of semi-transparent agate of a pale grey, or honey-beige color, such as here. The Palace workshops were responsible for a range of extremely well-made bottles from the material, some with carved designs, some without. A group may be seen in Moss, Graham, Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, vol. 2, no. 348, a plain bottle of similar material to this one, and nos. 354-356, all with carving and two with Qianlong reign marks, and no. 358, another plain example which belonged to the first Prince Cheng.
Auction result comparison: Compare with a related bottle at Sotheby’s New York on March 23rd, 2004, in Chinese Works of Art, lot 79.
