“WANG XIZHI OBSERVING GEESE” BY YUAN WU (1959)
China, 1998. Ink and watercolors on fan-shaped paper. Elaborately painted in the artists distinct style to depict the famous calligrapher master standing on a small rock in a pond, observing five geese swimming amid numerous water lilies. Two seals, signature and inscription.
Provenance: A French private collection. Thierry Desbenoit & Associés, Paris, France. A Spanish private collection, acquired from the above.
Condition: Fine condition with minor creasing.

Wang Xizhi was a Chinese writer and official who lived during the Jin Dynasty (265–420), best known for his mastery of Chinese calligraphy. Wang is generally regarded as the greatest Chinese calligrapher in history and was a master of all forms of Chinese calligraphy, especially the running script. Wang Xizhi is particularly remembered for one of his hobbies, that of rearing geese. According to legend he learned how to turn his wrist whilst writing from observing how geese moved their necks.
