Meiji period (1868-1912), attributed to Komai Company, rectangular form inlaid with gold and silver, cover has a very finely crafted intricate landscape design created by etching and then inlaying the surface, the sides have autumn leaves, gilt interior, underside has seal script mark associated with the Ashihara school of Komai company. 0.75 x 2.25 x 1.75 in. The Komai family were leaders in the Damascene or Nunome Zogan technique. The process to create a miniature landscape decoration such as on this box would have taken hundreds of hours to complete.
