拍品描述 翻译
Description: Western Asia, Iran (Persia) or Iraq, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. An elegant ceramic vessel with deep, flaring sides, a flat interior base, and a raised disc foot. The interior and exterior aside from the foot are coated with a beautiful glaze now aged and presenting excellent craquelure. On the interior, the glaze is enhanced with sgraffito. This style of vessel is known as splashed sgraffito ware, or sometimes Bamiyan ware after a place where it was made in Afghanistan. It was first created in Iran and Iraq sometime in the 10th century CE. On this example, the sgraffito divides the interior walls into several elongated trapezoidal panels, each featuring floral motifs with sinuous green vines and abundant aubergine-colored fruit. The base is divided into fourths using sgraffito, with leaf- and petal-like motifs painted in the same green and aubergine. The purple color - created using manganese - is rare. Size: 6.75" W x 3.25" H (17.1 cm x 8.3 cm) Sgraffito ware remains understudied, but it seems to have developed in Coptic Egypt in the 5th or 6th century CE. Using a sharp tool, the artist would incise motifs into the body of the vessel so that the lines appeared to be painted the color of the pottery itself. In the Islamic world, the motifs are often simple scrollwork, floral, or occasionally birds, with green, brown, yellow, and, rarely, purple accents. The vessels were also coated with a colorless glaze that protected the colors. This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase. Provenance: private California, USA collection, moved from Germany in 1997 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #148827 Condition Report: Intact, with a few tiny chips and nicks commensurate with age, notably on the edge of the foot. Glaze is in beautiful condition with a few tiny losses and gorgeous craquelure. Small area of fire damage along the rim. Two tiny drill marks on underside for TL test.
