Very rare late 18th century dish Well painted with European hunting scene in polychrome. Its shallow/almost flat shape with wide perforated edge is unique to Qianlong and early Jiaqing period (1735 - 1799 AD), to suit European taste. Its painting may resemble European oil painting; but a careful examination finds Chinese brush work and the use of Chinese enamels. The border decorations on the outer most edges of the rim and the inner base, consisting square unit with a star inside, are extension of borders decorations of some Kangxi porcelain. The use of solid gold powder-containing enamel to fill the three gold lines and the multi-trident like border is of early Jiaqing period. Around mid 19th century, imported chemical liquid gold enamel replaced gold powder enamel. Thus the features of its period are clearly evidenced. This dish has a fine and hard clay body, common to early Jiaqing porcelain and is quite different from European porcelain of softer and coarser clay. This quality dish should be connoisseurs delight. With printed Jiaqing mark that was used primarily on export porcelain. 清嘉慶粉彩描金洋人狩獵圖鏤空邊盤 Size: 10 in.
