A pair of George II silver waiters by Robert Rew, London 1754Shaped-circular form, with shell borders, on three hoof feet, engraved with the arms of Charles Cathcart (1721-1776), 9th Baron Cathcart and Knight of the Thistle, diameter 17cm, weight 14.5oz. (2) 注脚 Charles CATHCART (1721-1776) of Sundrum Castle and later Greenock was the second son and eventual heir of Charles CATHCART (1686-1740), 8th Baron Cathcart and the heiress Marion SCHAW of Greenock. The 8th Baron died on route to command British forces in America and was the son and heir of Allan CATHCART (died 1732), the 7th Baron, and Elizabeth DALRYMPLE (1653-1719) daughter of James DALRYMPLE (1619-1695), 1st Viscout Stair.William de CATHCART swore allegiance to Edward I but his son Sir Alan de CATHCART was a supporter of Robert the Bruce and married the sister of Sir Duncan WALLACE of Sundrum Castle, who had no heir. On the death of Sir Duncan WALLACE the Castle of Sundrum was awarded by Robert the Bruce to Sir Alan de CATHCART, his grandson also Sir Alan CATHCART was created Baron Cathcart in 1447.Charles CATHCART (1721-1776), 9th Baron Cathcart, Chief of Clan Cathcart and Knight of the Thistle married in 1753 Jane HAMILTON (1722-1771) daughter of Lord Archibald HAMILTON (1673-1754), son of William DOUGLAS-HAMILTON (1634-1694) Duke of Hamilton, and Jane HAMILTON (1704-1753). He was an Hanoverian soldier, who was notably wounded when shot in the face at the Battle of Fontenay in 1745 but later in 1760 became a Lieutenant General . He was a close friend of the Duke of Cumberland, being appointed Lord of the Royal Bedchamber and from 1752 ambassador extraordinary to Russia. His son and heir William Schaw CATHCART (1755-1843) 10th Baron was created in 1807 Viscount CATHCART and in 1814 Earl CATHCART.
