KRIDER CO., STERLING Weight: 1.8 ounces (gross) An important match safe made for Princeton University football player and later coach, William (Bill) Winston Roper. The Princeton Tiger on one side commemorates the Tiger's 11-10 victory over their Yale rivals. The Princeton crest on the other side has '1899' below it, and W.W. Roper engraved.
The match safe with repoussé design depicting a tiger with football to front, enameled Princeton school crest and year 1899 to reverse, inscribed WW Roper, hinged lid, match strike to bottom.
This match safe commemorates the 11-10 victory of the Princeton Tigers over Yale in the final game of the 1899 season. The original owner of this piece was William Winston Roper (class of 1902) who played left end. Roper went on to become the head football coach at the Virginia Military Institute (1903-1904), the University of Missouri (1903-1904), Swarthmore College (1915-1916), and Princeton (1906-1908, 1910-1911, 1919-1930). A 1951 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame, Roper's legacy continues to this day with Princeton's annual award of the William Winston Roper Trophy.
