OTHER NOTES
The novel
Tim, Colleen McCullough's first attempt at writing a work for publication, was written in her spare time whilst working in research and teaching in the neuroscience department of Yale University, in New Haven, Connecticut. In her telling of the story of the love affair between Tim Melville, a young gardener with mild intellectual disability, and his older customer, Mary Horton, McCullough drew on her experience in neuroscience, which she felt gave her a unique insight into the context of Tim and Mary's relationship and allowed her to portray her central characters with accuracy and sensitivity. Originally called
Not the Full Quid, the title was changed to
Tim at the direction of her editor. In 1979, the book was adapted for screen in a film starring Mel Gibson in the titular role.
