and acrylic on canvas PROVENANCEDirect from artist 80cm by 80cm “These paintings form part of the Delft onMy Mind series of oil and acrylic on canvasworks that thematically refers to aspects ofthe Dutch Golden Age where beauty andaffluence were intimately linked. During thepeak of the tulip mania of the 17th century,a single bulb sold for more than 10 timesthe annual income of a skilled crafts worker. The opulent still lifes from this era reflectsthe obsession with tulips and roses asobjects of desire.]During the same century, the VOC startedtrading with China for their blue and whiteporcelain, referred to as Kraak Porceleyn. The local potters tried to re-create theirown version of the Chinese wares butcame up with homegrown pottery calledDelfse Porceleyn - now referred to as DutchDelftware.Jan van Riebeek and the VOC landed inthe Cape during the mid-17th century. Thisseries of paintings explores aspects of theDutch heritage of South Africa. The flowerarrangements are still in 'overdaad' but insome cases, only shards of the Delft-wareremains. The splinters of porcelain becomea nostalgic symbol, a gentle reminder thatnothing lasts forever.”Louis Jansen van Vuuren, Artist, France, September 2019
