Rare old Naga shoulder wrap "elephant scarf" from Manipur, early/mid 20th c, India. Such textiles are called "elephant scarves", as they always depict elephants in the center. This piece shows four elephants in the middle of the five embroidered horizontal stripes. The fabric is made up of two bands of fine, handwoven cotton sewn together. The expansive midfield is black and divided in five horizontal stripes by delicate lines. Colorful stripes finish the fabric to the left and right, while the upper and lower trims are red. The five horizontal stripes are richly embroidered with red, green and white silk on a black background with figures of the four central elephants, yellow birds, colorful big blossoms and much more.
