An antique Khmer Temple Guardian in the Angkor Wat style. Typical of the Angkor Wat style the sculpture possessa?? a gradeur and design evoking the aesthetic of the early tenth century. The head is crafted in the round with an ornate coiffure with full lips and almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils beneath gently curving brows. At the same time, the statue is not submitted to strict iconographic norms, the statues face loses its stiffness and becomes more human. The a??guardians of the gatea??, are placed around the outside of a temple to serve both as greeters and defenders, they were specifically intended to protect the principle entrances of temples. The head is loose mounted on a wood base (later). Please contact us for high resolution images of the piece.?
