6-3/4" x 3-5/8" Cylindrical bamboo brush holder finely carved depicting Cao Cao, the penultimate Chancellor of the Eastern Han dynasty in a landscape, wearing a traditional court garment with dragon, standing in a pensive state observing his surroundings. Carved with calligraphy "running script" presenting a poem created by Cao Cao in 207 AD, from right to left, starting from as auspicious double gourd symbol: View the sea (Refers to "the Bohai Sea or Bo Sea" in northeast of China) I come to view the boundless sea, From Stony Hill on eastern shore. Its water rolls in rhythmic motion, And islands stand amid its roar. Tree on tree grows from peak to peak, Grass on grass looks lush far and high. The autumn wind blows drear and bleak, The monstrous billows surge up high. The sun by day, the moon by night, Appear to rise up from the deep. The Milky Way with stars so bright, Sinks down into the sea in sleep. How happy I feel at this sight!
