Qing Dynasty, 18th Century.
Finely painted with four small birds near a water’s edge by a porous rock formation and sprays of lingzhi, blossoming peony and narcissus, with two butterflies and a dragonfly fluttering above, framed and mounted on a reticulated stand, 35 x 24cm. (2)
The word ‘pairs of quail’, shuang’an, are a homophone for 'peace and prosperity'. Compositions incorporating two pairs of birds and of this scale are highly unusual. For a painted enamel hat stand with quail scenes see Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels, volume V, cat no 169, p 224. A small vase, similarly decorated, is in the British Museum collection, museum number 1936,0413.46. Both date to the Qianlong period.
