Table analytique et raisonnée des Tableaux de la Suisse, [..]. A Paris, Chez Lamy [..], 1788, [4],II,129 pp. With woodcut title-vignette. Large folio (ca. 53 x 35 cm.), late 18th-cent. unif. half-calf, gilt ribbed spine with 2 contrasting mor. letterpieces, uncut. (5x), ? Cohen/ De Ricci 1075-1076. W?ber p. 38. Brunet V, 1546. First edition printed on LARGE PAPER (in uncut state) of a magnificent work concerning the topography & history of Switzerland by the Swiss military & historian Béat Fidèle Antoine Jean Dominique de la Tour-Chatillon de Zurlauben (1720-1795) and the French composer Jean-Benjamin Fran?ois de la Borde (1734-1794) illustrated with beautiful engravings by i.a. Fran?ois Denis Née (1732-1817) & Louis-Joseph Masquelier (1741-1811) after i.a. Alexis-Nicolas Pérignon (1726-1782) comprising i.a. 4 maps of cantons of Switzerland, 71 portraits (printed on 11 leaves) & more than 400 views of i.a. Basel, Bern, Fribourg, Geneva, Lugano, Lucerne, Neuchatel, Schaffhausen, Sion & St. Gallen. The scarce index-volume was compiled by the French playwriter Fran?ois-Antoine Quétant (1733-1823). ? Originally published in instalments at least three variants of the first edition (with slightly differing publisher’s adresses) are known. Our set lacks the engraved frontispiece (by F.D. Née after J.-M. Moreau), letterpress title in vol. I (“Tableaux topographiques, pittoresques, physiques, historiques, moraux, politiques, littéraires de la Suisse [..]”) with publisher’s address of Jacques-Gabriel Clousier (Paris, 1780), 1 engraved general map of Switzerland & probably 2 letterpress half-titles in vol. II. The unnumbered 5 maps & 2 folding views are listed in the index at the end of vol. II (no. 87, 113, 171, 185, 211-212 & 215), so the number of 278 engravings is complete. ? A few small defects to the bindings (spine-ends of 2 vols. sl. torn, backstrip of 1 vol. sl. stained, upper corner of both covers of index-vol. damaged). A few leaves sl. marg. waterstained (incl. engraved title), vertical fold in first leaf of vol. I, occ. (sl.) foxed/ browned, but altogether an impressive set in good condition.
