An antique Japanese early Momoyama period (1573-1615) lacquer tea caddy or cha-ire, in a diamond or rhomboid form with rim articulation and flat lid, black lacquer with sprinkled gold surrounding four black panels with inlaid lead squares in an almost checkerboard pattern to create a ground for a falling chrysanthemum pattern, sprinkled gold and gold interior, double crane crest or mon on underside of lid, approx. 2 3/4 by 2 3/4 by 2 1/2 inches.
