LOT NOTES Alexei Hanzen was born in Odessa into the family of the renowned marine artist Ivan Aivazovsky. Aivazovsky, his grandfather, was the most prolific Russian artist of his time, but nevertheless found time to give classes to his the young Alexei. Under his tutelage and after an extensive German internship, Hanzen became a refined maritime painter in his own right. In 1917, Hanzen had his first personal exhibition in Saint Petersburg. After the Revolution, the artist with his family immigrated to Yugoslavia. Yugoslavian and Italian royal families frequently commissioned Hanzen to paint the beautiful Dubrovnik coastline.
