LOT NOTES An important Jewish female modernist artist, Jehudith Sobel was born in Poland in 1924 and studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Lodz. Her teachers including Malevich’s assistant Wladyslaw Streminksi, as well as Stefan Wegner. After World War II, she moved to Israel upon its founding, where her work was widely exhibited in the new country with an innate appreciation for European modernism. Emigrating from Israel to New York in 1956, already an established artist, Sobel’s works were exhibited at the ACA Gallery, New Masters Gallery, and the Jewish Museum amongst others. With her husband, she bought a house in Woodstock, New York, where she also exhibited frequently at the Woodstock Artists Association.
