RETRO SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND 'LUDO HEXAGONE' BRACELET, BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Old and calibré-cut sapphires, old and single-cut diamonds, gold (French marks), circa 1936, 18.0 cm, signed Van Cleef & Arpels, no. 47350
First designed in 1934 under the supervision of Renée Puissant, Alfred Van Cleef’s daughter and artistic director of Van Cleef & Arpels and named after Louis 'Ludo' Arpels, the signature 'Ludo' bracelet has been successful since its introduction. The 'Ludo' model has been produced in various versions: 'Briquette' features a weave pattern, composed of narrow rectangular gold panels in a brickwork design, whereas 'Hexagone' with its honeycomb appearance consists of a mosaic arrangement of small articulated hexagonal links. The articulated strap is usually made in yellow gold, but also in platinum and rarely white gold. Typically, the 'Ludo' bracelet is set with rubies, sapphires and diamonds within a star shaped collet. Depending on the model, the clasp is designed as a buckle set with diamonds, or as a bridge of rubies or sapphires in Van Cleef & Arpels iconic Mystery setting.
