Japan. Late Edo period. 18th/19th c. Pigment and gold leaf on silk. Originally mounted as large hand roll, later cut for framing. Original mounting preserved. In the Edo period, the Daimy?, the sovereigns, were obliged to pay the Shogun an annual visit, which was called sankin k?tai. These journeys were celebrated with great pomp and precious equipment. Here is a Daimy? of the Asano clan on a gozabune, lit. 'ship with honorary seat' in company of numerous followers on further ships on the way. All ships carry curtains with coats of arms (mon) of the Asano clan with crossed falcon feathers in a circle (maru ni chigai taka no ha). 68 x 430cm. Condition A/B. Greyed, a few spots.
