Japan. Edo period (1603-1868). Late 18th/early 19th c. Tatsuke Takamitsu. Multicolored gold takamaki-e with kirikane details on rich roiro ground. On the front a flying H?? bird with wide open wings and long tail feathers. A branch of paulownia flowers (Jap. kiri) adorns the reverse. Tatsuke Takamitsu (go: K?ky?) worked in Ky?to and his works are mostly characterized by an unorthodox form and surface texture. Three-part. Width 7.6cm. Sign.: Tatsuke K?ky? kore wo ga, gy?nen hachi-j? sai (Tatsuke K?ky? painted this at the age of 80). Manj?-netsuke: Kaga stirrups and valerian flowers. Ebony with gold lacquer. ? 3.6cm.
