China. Ming dynasty, Jiajing period. Dated 1538. Bronze with dark patina and residue of gilding. Crowned, dressed in elaborate breast-jewellery and ribbons, sitting on a double lotus. Both hands in dharmachakra mudra. On the back of the base a longer inscription: Jiajing shiqi nian sanyue jiri zao (At a good day in the third month in the 17th year of the Jiajing period), Shanxi Taiyuan fu Wenshui xian ming... (Province of Shanxi, Town Wenshui, possibly by order of Wang...). Height 19.5cm. Condition B. Provenance: -Private collection Northern Germany, acquired since the 1850s.
