The yogi seated with his right knee raised on a rounded cushion draped with an antelope skin at the centre, dressed in a white robe, the face in a serene expression with his distinctive long locks of hair backed by a nimbus of ruyi-shaped clouds, with strewn jewels infront of him, flanked by two Kagyu-teachers, and with Vajradhara at top centre. Silk mounting. Although Milarepa is a progenitor of the Kagyu order, he is perceived by Tibetans of all orders as the archetypical 'yogi' and is held in the highest esteem for his heroic quest for enlightenment. A lone, emaciated and ragged figure, who rejected conventional modes of behaviour, he was also a powerful master of the 'dharma', attracting many disciples. The popular conception of his life is based on the collection of his verse, the 'Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa' and his biography, compiled and written by Tsangny?n Heruka (1452-1507). Though early criticised for its lack of historical reliability by Tharanatha (1575-1634), it is considered one of the greatest pieces of Tibetan literature.
