Polychrome woodcut. 379x254 mm, trimmed within margins. On the left the Toshidama cartouche with the name “Kōchōrō Toyokuni ga”. On the side of the author's cartouche, appears the oval censor seal. Print on thick paper. Good condition.
Beautiful print depicting two celebrated kabuki actors: Iwai Kumesabur? III as Agemaki, Kawarazaki Gonj?r? I as Sukeroku. One of the great entertainments of Kabuki, Sukeroku tells the story of the handsome and dashing Sukeroku and his lover, Agemaki. One of The Eighteen Favorite Plays (Juhachiban) of the Ichikawa family of actors. First performed in 1713.
