MANTEGNA. La battaglia degli Dèi marini. Parte sinistra e destra. Andrea MANTEGNA1431-1506 La battaglia degli Dèi marini. Parte sinistra e destra.ca. 1800 - ante 1824 Bulino. Due fogli di 299x398 e 299x440 mm, filomargine. Buono stato di conservazione. Bellissima copia ottocentesca. La stampa riproduce in due fogli la celebre Zuffa degli dèi marini, incisa dal Mantegna intorno al 1470: nell’originale le due scene erano impresse sullo stesso rame, con misure lievemente diverse rispetto a questa tiratura. Malaspina: “Questo soggetto è inciso in due pezzi qui uniti insieme formanti una specie di basso rilievo. Quivi a sinistra una figura scarna e lurida sul dorso d'un mostro marino colla mano monca rialzata tiene un cartello sul quale sta scritto INVID, ed è in atto di spargere discordia fra le divinità del mare, ciò che fa insorgere guerra anche nel regno di Nettuno, e quindi pugnano fra di esse, ma con armi tutte prese dal fluido elemento, cioè chi si fa scudo con teschio di animale marino, chi con mazzo di pesci ne forma grossa sferza, e chi combatte con ossa di grandi mostri. Allegoria dell'invidia, pensiero veramente poetico, e di maestrevole composizione. Stampa capitale di questo insigne artista.” Burin. Two sheets of 299x398 and 299x440 mm, small margins. Beautiful nineteenth-century copy of Mantegna original dated 1470 ca.The print reproduces in two sheets the famous fight of the marine gods, engraved by Mantegna around 1470: in the original the two scenes were imprinted on the same copper, with slightly different measurements with respect to this edition.Malaspina: "This subject is engraved in two pieces here joined together forming a kind of low relief. Here on the left a gaunt and filthy figure on the back of a sea monster holding the raised hand holds a sign on which INVID is written, and it is in the act of spreading discord among the gods of the sea, what makes war arise even in the kingdom of Neptune, and therefore they fought among them, but with weapons all taken from the fluid element, that is who is made shield with skull of marine animal, who with bunch of fish of it form great lash, and who fights with bones of great monsters.
