AQUILA, Pietro. Effigies Romanorum Imperatorum ex antiquis numismatibus, quae in thesauro Christinae Reginae adservantur delineatae, in seriem chronologicam dispositae, cum nominibus, patria, annis, mensibus, diebus, imperii, ac tempore obitus uniuscuiusque, a Iulio Caesare, ad Leopoldum Semp. Augus.Roma, Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi, 1681
Engraving series. 14 complete sheets in Elephant Folio mm. 550x400 (average, each sheet) for a total of mm. 1.100x2.800 ca. Lettered with title along the top, and on a separate plate on the last sheet with an account of the print, and "Romae Anno Sal. MDCLXXXI. Cura et Sumptibus Io. Iacobi de Rubeis prope Templum S. Mariae de Pace. Cum Privilegio Sum. Pont. Petro Aquila Panormitano delineante". Very nice specimen, with wide margins, uncut.
The complete series, extremely rare, of portrait heads of the160 Emperors of Rome from Julius Caesar to Maximilian, shown in circular medallions over 14 sheets, with three portraits across to four down on each sheet; the title and numering carries across the first seven sheets, and then restarts (with no running head) across the second group of seven sheets, so that the sheets could be combined to form a large panel of 1.100x2.800 mm.
