Zhu Ruzhen was born in Qingyuan, Guangdong, and acquired second overall place in the final imperial civil service examination of Chinese history in 1904. After that, the civil examination system was abolished, followed by the fall of Qing Dynasty. The scholar was appointed as the compiler of Hanlin Academy (the then Imperial Academy), and was sent to in Hosei University, Japan to study law in 1906.
He graduated after 2 years and shouldered the responsibility to codify the commercial law during the late Qing Dynasty. Zhu moved to Hong Kong in his latter years and became a lecturer of the University of Hong Kong. As one of the few scholars who took part in the last imperial examination in China, Zhu’s works are widely sought-after by collectors.
