Ghandara, 5th-6th centuryThe figure with the right hand raised in the abhayamudra and the left hand to lift a hem of the sanghati, the roundish face illuminated by a serene and meditative expression, the lobes of the ears stretched and the hair arranged in spirals also on the usnisa protuberance.24 cm highProvenance: Italian private collection. This sculpture exemplifies a production that was in vogue in the ancient region of Ghandara between the 5th and the 7th century, preferred by the monks and devotees for its smaller size and for the greater durability of the material that progressively replaced stone, stucco and terracotta. From the stylistic point of view, it shows the introjection of Gupta influences, while remaining visible the 'classicism' proper to Ghandara.* The present lot is offered with export license.* The thermoluminescence carried out on 28/5/2019 from Arcadia Tecnologie per i Beni Culturali, Milan, confirms the proposed dating.
