A Regency giltwood convex wall mirror, circa 1815, by Thomas Fentham, the oval mirror plate within a reeded ebonised slip, the concave frame with applied spheres, the reverse with remains of a paper trade label 'THOMAS FENT*** & CO. 136 STRAND NEAR SOMERSET HOUSE MANUFACTURORS OF LOOKING GLASSES CONVEX AND CONCAVE MIRRORS AND ALL SORTS OF PICTURE AND GLASS FOR FRAMES/GLASS FOR EXPORTATION', 61cm diameter overall Provenance: Hambrook House, Gloucestershire The Property of Graeme Alexander and Scott Carlton See Christopher Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, 1996, page 204-205 for a number of convex mirrors made by Thomas Fentham, and plate 337 for a more complete version of the label found on the present lot. Thomas Fentham was a carver, gilder, glass grinder and picture frame maker, but is best know for convex and architectural mirrors. The business occupied various addresses on the Strand between 1774 and 1825 and was based at No.136 between 1794 and 1820. Fentham's customers included Lady Heathcote and Charles Towneley.
