Ancient Egypt, late Pre-Dynastic, or Nubia, contemporary with this time period, ca. 4000 to 3100 BCE. A beautifully preserved ostrich egg used as a vessel, with its top gently removed to form a mouth and two tiny holes beside it, perhaps to string something so that it could be easily carried. Ancient Egyptians and Nubians during this time period frequently were buried with these vessels, which seem to have been quite valuable - they could be used as drinking or liquid storage vessels after their original contents had been consumed. They are much rarer in later periods, though the shape of some alabaster jars seems to have derived from them. Size: 4.35" W x 5.5" H (11 cm x 14 cm); 6.5" H (16.5 cm) on included custom stand.
