Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fine quartet of Coptic (Christian Egyptian) textile fragments composed of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in warm beige, brilliant plum, cocoa brown, and almond hues - depicting figural and decorative motifs. Three are geometric but one features fantastical zoomorphic motifs with a gryphon at its center. These are fragments from Coptic funerary robes woven in the Fayuum area of Egypt.
