Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. An elegant jar of a stocky form, free blown from translucent glass of a pale yellow-green hue. The vessel is defined by a concave base with a smooth pontil scar, an apple-shaped body with a sloped shoulder, a squat neck, and a collared rim with a flared rim. Oscillating between the rim and shoulder are several strands of applied rigaree that give the jar a sophisticated and personalized presentation. Scattered areas of thick silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence have formed across the exterior. Size: 3.6" W x 3.625" H (9.1 cm x 9.2 cm)Most scholars agree, Roman glass was of the highest quality - both aesthetically and technically - among the ancients. While glass making had been practiced for centuries, the Romans invented glass blowing in the 1st century BCE which revolutionized the artform. We can appreciate such a wide variety of forms and shapes, because the medium of glass has unique physical properties that make for so many more possibilities than metal or clay. Roman glassmakers reached incredible artistic heights with both free-blown vessels and mold blown forms and decorations. Provenance: private Florida, USA collection; ex-B.
