Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. A fine ensemble of rare Viking textile fragments that are tightly woven from natural animal hair and presented in earthen hues of beige, russet, dark brown, and purple. Some fragments feature faint geometric or linear motifs while others bear panels of solid color. Sections of the fragments are threaded through several spiraling bronze cylinder beads, paired rings, or thin strips with folded terminals. Textile fragments like these were perhaps important components of a Viking burial meant to protect the deceased during their journey to Valhalla. Size (largest fragment): 7.7" L x 2.4" W (19.6 cm x 6.1 cm); (display frame): 12" L x 9.9" W (30.5 cm x 25.1 cm).
