Ancient Near East, Old Babylon, ca. 1800 BCE. A mold-formed rectangular terracotta relief plaque depicting a fierce lion. The leonine creature sits with retracted hind legs, extended forelegs, a stocky body, and a furrowed mane that curves gently beneath the jawline. The raised head features a gaping, fang-filled mouth, drawn-back ears, a thick snout, and an almond-shaped eye peering out in an intimidating manner. Lions were highly symbolic creatures in Old Babylon that represented the ferocity of certain deities such as Ninurta and Inanna.
