Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A striking cast bronze cylinder, made to be part of a mace - probably placed around a wooden or less decorated metal staff into the socket beneath the mace head. The body has repeated high relief bulges around one end and incised triangular motifs at its center. Each end flares out slightly. Bronze Age Luristan art was the work of nomadic herdsmen and horsemen who crafted small, portable objects, including daggers, swords, and other weapons. Weapons and related bronze objects like these would have been entombed in the small rock graves in which their owners were buried.
