Near East / Western Asia, Parthia or possibly Eastern Roman, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A matching pair of incredibly ornate, exotic-looking earrings, made from 79% gold (equivalent to 18K) and each studded with four ovoid, wine red garnets. Each is composed of two tiers. First, there is a thick crescent made of gold sheet applied around a piece of cow bone with a large, teardrop-shaped dark purple glass pendant inlaid and encircled by granulation. Below that, the bottom tier resembles a chandelier with the inlaid garnets and bulbous projections as well as further granulations. Modern gold ears are attached to the upper tier, allowing these to be worn! Size: 1.1" W x 2.55" H (2.8 cm x 6.5 cm); 79% gold (equivalent to 18K); total weight of both: 24.2 grams.
