Central Asia, eastern India, Cuttack, Odisha, ca. 19th century CE. An incredibly ornate piece of jewelry, distinctively Indian. The necklace consists of a latticework of gilded silver held together by strands of pearls and more gilded silver. The terminals of the necklace are triangular sheets of gilded silver, each studded with ten gems and pearls - peridot, rubies, emeralds, carnelian, opals, and sapphires. A metallic cord with a red and green tassel creates a soft surface to rest against the back of the neck while the heavy lattice hangs down the chest. At the nadir of the necklace is a large pendant in the form of a multi-petaled flower. The pendant is made of gilded silver with a large inlaid green stone at its center and another of similar size hanging down from it. Around the central stone are twelve pearls and gemstones, the same as in the triangular terminals, with a diamond at the top. There are over a hundred pearls on the piece! Length of chain: 28" L (71.1 cm); size of pendant: 1.2" W x 1.4" H (3 cm x 3.6 cm) A gorgeous and delicate piece of antique wedding jewelry, completely wearable!
